Four Business Books for Artists
Art Inc. by Lisa Congdon
At the time that I read this book I found it helpful. Looking back I’m pressed to remember if it was just an overview or if there were detailed steps. So I looked back. She wrote aspiringly to the artist audience and added chapter ending subsections about working artists to illustrate her point.
The Pocket Small Business Owner’s Guide to Building Your Business by Kevin Devine
Of everything I’ve picked up so far, this has been the most helpful. Artists need to know a little of everything. Marketing, production, sales, shipping, exhibition, art fairs, color theory, history… and business.
How to Profit From the Art Print Market by Barney Davey
I picked this one up after learning about it from a list. Hmmm. Hmmm. Not what I expected. This was more focused on landing a corporate contract through a national art fair and less about creating and selling prints of your work.
Business and Legal Forms for Fine Artists by Tad Crawford
A great resource book. Entirely editable forms. Make contracts. I’d recommend having this on hand▪️
